“A holistic, practical workshop all about educating and preparing you to birth in the system”

our Mission

It’s a challenging time to give birth. In Australia, about 38% of babies are born via caesarean and almost one in two first time mothers have their labour induced with synthetic hormones.

For those of us who want a vaginal birth and want to birth in hospital – what can we do to give ourselves the best possible chance of making this happen?

Enter Brain.Body.Birth –   a practical two-day workshop brought to you by Carmen from Motherme Doula and Marion from Yoga for Mama, all about educating and preparing you to birth in the system, whether that’s in hospital or through a midwifery group practice

“Our teaching integrates evidence-based information with yoga and breathwork to prepare women and partners for an informed, active birth”

Our philosophy

We believe the best preparation for birth addresses both the brain and the body. Our teaching integrates evidence-based information and knowledge with yoga and breathwork to prepare women and partners for an informed, active birth.

Women deserve honest discussion about the challenges of birth and the realities of birthing in the system. Together, we share our insights and learnings, so you know your options ahead of time and can decide what’s right for you.

Knowledge is one part of preparation. That’s the brain part. The other part is body preparation.

Yoga is an incredible practice for birth preparation and this is supported by research. In our workshop we focus on postures to ease discomfort in pregnancy and promote balance and alignment in the body for a more straight forward labour.

We also give special focus to breathwork ‘pranayama’ and restorative yoga to deepen mind/body connection. By bringing awareness to the tension and discomfort we feel in certain poses, we can lean into sensations and bring our focus to breath – this is a powerful practice to learn in the lead up to labour.

Practical partner support and advocacy

We know what a significant role partners play in the birth space, so we deep dive into what makes a good support person, sharing practical tips and techniques from our extensive experience supporting women and partners, as well as guidance around advocacy and decision making.

Of course when it comes to comfort measures and ways to cope with the intensity of labour, we cover all the practical tools available to you. Things like massage, counter pressure and functional positions and techniques to open the pelvis and relax the pelvic floor.

We can’t wait to meet you.
With love,

— Carmen and Marion, Founders of Brain.Body.Birth

“Marion and Carmen both bring their own unique experiences and skillset to help families prepare for birth. It is so exciting to see them come together to provide birth support to the Newcastle community!

I have previously attended Marion’s prenatal and postpartum yoga programs, and I have been supported by Carmen in her birth education and doula roles.

Marion and Carmen both share an incredible belief in the power of women and their natural birthing instincts. Their understanding of birth goes beyond the physical, recognising the importance of emotional, social and environmental factors in preparing for birth and postpartum.

They both have an openness around listening to families, which I believe has allowed them to truly understand the diversity of families and support their different needs. Most importantly, their programs help to build the confidence of the birthing team and provide practical ways for the birthing person and their support team to navigate the wild and beautiful ride that is birth.”

  • CHARLIE

“I feel so lucky that I was able to work with both Carmen and Marion at different points through my journey to motherhood. In the lead up to birth they both played a huge role in helping me connect with my baby and my body: through yoga, breathwork, and providing a safe and nurturing space for reflection.

They both have so much wisdom about birth and motherhood. I felt really empowered during the birth of my son because of the preparation work I’d been able to do with Carmen and Marion.

Carmen really helped me understand all the different options I would have during labour with regards to interventions and pain relief. She helped me make a beautiful birth map and supported me to feel confident in voicing my needs.

Marion really helped my partner and I prepare for birth with yoga and breathwork practices. Both women have a beautiful, warm and non-judgemental presence. Working with them I felt so nurtured, supported and uplifted. It was a wonderful way to be initiated into motherhood.”

“From the moment we connected, Carmen brought an incredible sense of warmth, support and understanding to my journey. Carmen is not just a doula; she’s a guiding light, making me feel deeply heard, supported, nurtured and nourished, both before and after birth. Her presence during my pregnancy was invaluable - she answered all my questions with such care during our birth preparation sessions, leaving me feeling empowered and confident in my body’s natural ability to bring new life into this world.

I’ve also had the privilege of knowing Marion through both my first pregnancy and my current one, and I honestly can’t get enough of her pregnancy yoga classes. Marion is more than just a yoga teacher; she’s a compassionate soul who creates a safe and nurturing environment for us expecting mothers. Her intuitive understanding of our needs, combined with her deep knowledge of yoga philosophy and anatomy, makes every class a gentle yet powerful experience. Each session leaves me feeling relaxed, stretched and completely at home in my body. Marion’s guidance has been a true gift during this special time in my life.”

“I birthed my 5.1kg baby at home at 43 weeks and could never have done this without the powerhouse team that are Carmen and Marion.

I’d heard a bit about doulas but wasn’t sure what to expect. I immediately felt at home with Carmen, She listened to my frustrations about birthing in the system and supported my decision to change care provider later in my pregnancy. Having Carmen on my team helped me to feel calm, confident and ready for birth.

I also attended many sessions of birth ready yoga (my last at 42+5 weeks pregnant!) with Marion and my partner and her birth preparation workshops. These were invaluable to prepare my body and mind for birth, My partner was so grateful for the knowledge too. It helped hi to feel much more confident to support me – he was brilliant.

If you are wanting a positive birth experience where you feel prepared, empowered and held, you want these absolutely amazing women on your team. Thank you so very much Carmen and Marion for sharing your gifts with me.”

“Carmen and Marion supported me during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Their knowledge on pregnancy and birth was a source of comfort during this huge transition. Carmen’s doula work was echoed in Marion’s prenatal yoga, with a focus on optimal birth positions, building confidence to navigate the system in a way that aligns with your values and ensuring support systems were in place for a nourishing postpartum. Both women are warm, knowledgeable and truly passionate and professional about their work. I could not recommend integrating them in your birth and postpartum journey enough. Thank you ladies.”

MEET OUR TEAM

Marion Loisance
I am Marion, certified fertility and perinatal yoga teacher (pregnancy and postpartum), mama of two, currently undertaking my Master of Counselling.

I was 26 weeks pregnant with my first daughter when I undertook my initial yoga teaching training. I immediately knew that I would look to deepen my knowledge and specialise in perinatal yoga, as I felt wonderfully connected and in tune with my emotions, body and baby. I found my Dharma. Fast forward a couple of years (and just after giving birth to my second daughter), I qualified as a Pre and Postnatal yoga teacher. I have since pursued my studies in fertility yoga, to support women through their conception journey.

As for many women, my matrescence changed my priorities and pushed me towards feeling more aligned and working with integrity. I am dedicating my energy and passion to guiding women in their motherhood journey, through breathing, movement, connection and love. Being myself a mum of 2, I like to tap into my own story, birth and mothering experiences in my work and make sure mamas are supported, held and listened to.

Carmen Moyle
My name is Carmen and I’m a mother to three wonderful primary school-aged children.

As a trained journalist, I worked in newspapers and corporate communications before having my first baby 12 years ago.

Like so many birth workers, it was my own experience of birth that brought me to this work. That first time around, I intuitively felt capable. But despite reading all the books and attending an independent childbirth class, I was not prepared for the hospital system. I assumed hospital would support normal birth physiology and did not fully understand how protocol and common interventions could influence the course of labour, and affect me and my baby.

In 2017 I became a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and I have also trained with DONA International, the first and largest doula training organisation.

As a birth educator and doula, my aim is for women to approach birth feeling informed, supported and confident in their body’s incredible capacity for birth. Our birth experience stays with us forever, and has a massive impact on our start to motherhood. Imagine if every woman emerged from birth with that feeling of ‘wow, I did that, I can do anything’. That’s my dream.
